Fern Renville (Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate) is the Managing Director of Seattle’s Red Eagle Soaring Native Youth Theatre. When an SPD officer killed First Nations woodcarver John T. Williams in August of 2010, Fern was one of many of Seattle’s citizens who were moved to get more involved in the issues of public safety and police accountability - but became embroiled in the civic drama on a personal level when befriending the Williams family exposed her to SPD intimidation and harassment. During the past year, Fern watched the urban Native youth of Red Eagle Soaring explore and express onstage their experience of the John T. William’s tragedy - a process which required thinking about historical context and ongoing contemporary power struggles between dominant and Native cultures.
